Inspired by the intricate forms and patterns found in the depths of the ocean, my work pays homage to the awe-inspiring artistry of Ernst Haeckel, whose scientific illustrations captured the delicate and otherworldly beauty of marine life. In this series, I aim to reflect the fragility of our oceans—a delicate ecosystem teetering on the brink of destruction.
The sculptures are meticulously crafted from clear glass, a medium chosen for its transparency and purity, mirroring the clarity and vulnerability of the ocean itself. Through a technique of sandblasting, I have created a frosted surface that enhances the textures, giving each piece an ethereal, almost ghostly quality. The delicate veil of frost accentuates the intricate details each individual piece possesses. The bell jar serves as a symbolic cloak of protection. This protective layer represents the fragile boundary between life and destruction—without such protection, these forms, much like the ecosystems they represent, would inevitably be lost to time and neglect.
The interplay of light and shadow, the ethereal surfaces, and the translucent nature of the glass all invite the viewer to contemplate the beauty and the fragility of the natural world, and the urgency with which we must safeguard it.
